Holidays... or remaining

holiday must-haves have dropped 20% to £442 – making it the least dear of the six eurozone resorts we checked. It’s also worth noting Portugal has already put special measures in place to ensure all UK tourists are fast-tracked through its airports so they won’t be delayed post-Brexit.

In the Costa del Sol, prices aren’t hot. They’re down just 0.7% compared to 2018, at £584 for our basket, making Torremolinos almost a third dearer than the Algarve.

Meanwhile in Cyprus, Paphos has seen a drop of 13.7% in prices, and with a total bill of £581 it takes fourth place in our holiday hotspots table.

Depsite having the biggest price fall of almost 22% over the past year, Playa de Palma in Majorca will still cost £710 for a week’s essentials due to sharp price rises last year. And families need to factor in the extra cost of the tourist tax, between 2% and 4% of accommodation costs depending on where you stay. Swapping Palma for the Costa del Sol will save families over £126 for our staples, as well as the tourist tax.

Post Office Travel Money figures show two of the European resorts we checked will cost more this summer. Prices in Zadar in Croatia are up 7.4% to £872. For the fifth year running, Sorrento in Italy is the dearest European resort where families face a bill of £1,071 for essentials – up almost 18% year on year.

And if you fancy the US, you’ll have to cough up more this year. Despite local prices in Orlando, Florida being down slightly, the weak pound against the dollar means it will cost £618 for our basket, 6.6% more than last year.

Nick Boden, head of Post Office Travel Money, said: “If you haven’t booked, our barometer prices show you where you’ll get best value. Also, make a list of money-saving holiday rules and stick to them.”

In spite of Brexit there’s good news – 7 of the 10 destinations abroad we checked have seen falls in prices
