SALUTE TO A TRUE HERO
This week I told the story of Robbie Mullen in the
Mirror. He was the undercover hero who foiled a neo-Nazi’s plot to murder Labour MP Rosie Cooper and a policewoman. As his friends moved towards terrorism, he became a HOPE not Hate informant. His courage in making the journey from fascist to anti-fascist is a story of redemption and hope. After it was published Robbie received the following, deeply moving letter.
Dear Mr Mullen,
I am of Jewish heritage (although an atheist!). My late mother lost 11 relatives in Ravensbruck and Flossenburg. I have one nonagenarian aunt remaining, whose tattoo is still visible on her forearm.
I am a descendant of so many of those who were killed at the hands of the Nazis in World War II. To stand up against Fascism is not only a requirement of being human, but it is also an imperative that must never be allowed to fail.
But to do so from within requires not only the utmost bravery but also the utmost inner self-sacrifice and inner humanity. I salute you for being both utterly brave and utterly selfsacrificing and utterly human.
My late grandfather belonged to the German resistance against Hitler. He would have embraced you as a comrade in that struggle, as I do now. Thank you, Peter
Thank you to everyone who donated to support Mannie Ruiz and David Badillo’s swim for Grenfell last week. The two old friends – a firefighter and a bereaved relative – were brought back together in the most horrific way by the fire. On Sunday, they swam 5km at the local pool where they were teenage lifeguards together, to raise almost £6,000 for Grenfell families. You can still donate here - tinyurl. com/ y4vkhykk
