Susie was right to defend McCanns

- Edited by FIONA PARKER T G Thomas, Plymouth

■ WHAT a thoughtful article by Susie Boniface (Mirror, April 3). The hate and blame Kate and Gerry McCann have had to put up with in the 12 years since she disappeared must have been shattering.

Not only did they lose their little girl, they’ve been blamed over and over again for leaving her and her siblings alone.

But how many of us can honestly claim to be the perfect parents?

The truth is we all make mistakes and this couple paid the ultimate price and will keep on paying for the rest of their lives.

How they have kept their sanity and raised the twins, God only knows.

Kerry Duggan, Sheffield

■ We have to be realistic and accept that after 12 years of investigation – some of which was botched by the Portuguese police – there’s no new positive line of enquiry to justify spending any more time or money on the search for Madeleine. With the financial restraints being imposed on the police, the investigation should be put on hold and re-opened if a new line of inquiry presents itself.

■ Madeleine McCann has now been missing for 12 years and, in the unlikely event she’ll be found, has anyone thought that she may not even remember her parents? After all, she would have been without her family for many more years than she was with them.

Also, I wonder if the same resources and investigations would have been afforded to Mr and Mrs Joe Bloggs from a non-professional family if they had lost their child? Gillian Dallison, Valley, Anglesey

■ Your columnist Susie Boniface got it totally right when she broached the subject of Madeline McCann’s disappearance and the fact that she may be still alive.

We must not forget about her. The only hope is that someone who knows something about her abduction will have the conscience to come forward with information that will resolve the case and bring closure to her tormented parents.

Michael Smith, Chatham, Kent

■ Kate and Gerry McCann have been judged very harshly over Madeleine’s disappearance.

There are more bad parents now than ever – I see plenty walking miles ahead of their little children in the street. I’ve even seen toddlers playing out alone.

The McCanns don’t deserve the hate that’s been heaped on them.

Elisa Halliday Stoke-on-Trent ■ I feel now is the time to stop looking for Madeleine. Sorry if this offends some people, but enough is enough.

We hear so much about the McCanns but little about all the other missing children.

This is something that should be addressed. We all know the police are overstretched and the resources should be used elsewhere.
