Brexit shambles just deepens rifts

-

■ Boris Johnson has said Theresa May mustn’t “surrender” to Jeremy Corbyn and a soft Brexit must not happen. Why is it I can’t help but wonder if the likes of Jacob ReesMogg, IDS and the other “ERGers” have some ulterior motive in getting out of the EU?

As Rees-Mogg has already moved his company into Ireland, has he already convinced the rest there’s more money to be made?

When Brexiteers state that the country voted Out, they should also acknowledge that nearly half voted to Remain – we weren’t all conned by Johnson and Farrage’s big red bus.

We must never allow Boris the buffoon to be prime minister. Fiona Byron Oldridge Immingham, North East Lincs

■ What a betrayal to the people who voted for Brexit. There have been talks after talks. We are all weary after almost three years of this utter shambles. There’s no point in asking for an extension – if MPs can’t agree after nearly three years what do they hope to achieve in another few weeks? I know our Queen isn’t meant to meddle in politics, but I wish she would step in to stop any further delay. I, for one, am never going to vote again as I’ve lost all faith in politicians.

■ When I voted Leave, I never gave a second thought to human rights, the customs union or any of the other benefits of being in the EU. But now, after two years of dithering, threats, bribes and untruths, I’m starting to have doubts. What really concerns me is why Conservative multi-millionaire MPs are so hysterically obsessed with leaving without a deal? What’s in it for these rightwing extremists whose only aim is to burn down all the bridges built with Europe by successive governments over the last 50 years?

There must be a general election, and let the people choose the party they wish to negotiate Brexit.

■ A new referendum wouldn’t serve any purpose. If the public again voted to leave, the authorities would start the same fear tactics and would try to stop us by using the same devious ploys. But if the result was to remain then the powers that be would accept the result at once and we’d never be allowed to have a referendum again. A Wills, Ruislip, West London

■ Leavers need to be convinced that holding a second referendum isn’t just a conspiracy to stay in the EU permanently. The legislation for any second referendum should insist if Remain were to win, a third referendum would happen in a few years’ time. It would also need to insist if Remain were to lose again, then that would be the end of it.

Brett Grainger, Rugeley, Staffs

■ The Brexit pantomime has reached truly shrill levels, but it doesn’t take a genius to realise any deal with the EU is tantamount to continued slavery. All May’s proclamations of no deal being better than a bad deal have been lies to keep us calm while our exit is pointlessly delayed, resulting in yet more billions being fed to the EU.

The sooner we can extricate ourselves from Brussels, the better.
