MOUSSA: I’D NO IDEA WE WON IT

-

MOUSSA SISSOKO admits he didn’t realise Spurs had knocked Manchester City out to reach the Champions League semi-finals until he was told in the dressing room.

With City leading 4-3 – and the aggregate score 4-4 in favour of Tottenham on away goals – Raheem Sterling’s stoppage-time goal sparked wild celebrations before it was overruled when VAR spotted Sergio Aguero offside.

Sissoko, replaced in the first half following an injury (below), was so distraught after Sterling struck that he stormed down the tunnel – not realising the “goal” was then disallowed.

“I was on the bench when I saw the goal made it 5-3,” he said. “I was so upset that I returned directly to the dressing room. I was alone, no one had accompanied me, no TV screen was broadcasting the game.

“In my head, we were eliminated. Then one of the staff members entered the dressing room and told me, ‘Incredible, we did it!’

“So I put on a T-shirt, I forgot about my injury and I ran outside to join the others (above), not to miss the celebrations for such a historic moment. It was an incredible, emotional shock.”

Team-mate Jan Vertonghen fears his former club Ajax could ruin his European dream.

The Dutch giants stand between Spurs and the final in Madrid on June 1.

“At the beginning in the Champions League, Ajax surprised everyone,” he said. “But now it’s not a surprise any more. It will be an unbelievable battle between two positive sides.”
