questions. But as time goes by you learn to cope, to package the past in a box and move on. It never goes away.”

He added: “She wanted happiness … in the form of a family. I’m lucky, I have a wonderful wife, two wonderful sons. I have the chance to see them take their first steps, to swim a length of the pool, to play football.” Speaking at London’s Royal Society he said: “What do I say 20 years on? Probably the same things I said 20 years ago.

“Jill was admired by many who had not met her, was respected by those who worked with her, and she was loved by everyone who knew her.” LOSS Alan last night BARRY George never received an apology for his wrongful conviction in Jill Dando’s murder because police have not found her killer, his sister has claimed.

Michelle Diskin Bates tells a TV documentary tonight: “Until he receives an apology – forget about compensation, compensation should be given to people who are wrongly convicted anyway – the apology is the important thing.

“Maybe we will have one if they find the person who really did carry this out.”

Barry was acquitted in a fresh trial in 2008, after eight years of wrongful imprisonment, but his

Barry and Michelle claim for compensation was dismissed by judges.

Michelle continues: “It’s not only the police, it’s the whole justice system. It starts with the police, then the CPS, then the court. At any stage these things could have been stopped. In Barry’s case they were not.

“It’s a double injustice because Jill’s family thought they had at least closure when Barry was convicted, and they have no closure because they still don’t know who killed their loved one.”

Barry tells the documentary: “To be questioned about a murder and you haven’t done it… just overwhelming. But my conscience was clear, I knew I hadn’t done it.

“The truth of the real killer is somewhere out there.”
