EMPATHY Prince yesterday PRINCE William has spoken of his grief over his mother Diana’s sudden death as he met victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks yesterday.

The Duke of Cambridge visited the two sites where a white gunman killed 50 worshippers and wounded dozens more on March 15 in the New Zealand city.

During a hospital visit he said: “I’ve had reason myself to reflect on grief, sudden pain and loss in my own life. You don’t forget…

“But I do not believe grief changes who you are.

“If you let it, it will reveal who you are.

“It will reveal depths you did not know you had.”

In a speech at Al Noor mosque later he said: “A terrorist attempted to sow division and hatred. I’m here to help you show the world that he failed.” A LORRY driver who killed a toddler at a pedestrian crossing was out on licence at the time from a life term for murder.

Dean Phoenix, 44, was jailed for 12 months yesterday after admitting causing the death of Jaiden Mangan, three, by careless driving.

He was cleared of the more serious charge of death by dangerous driving.

He was recalled to jail after the crash last March for breaching the terms of his licence, having been jailed in

2004 for killing wife Naomi at their home in Hounslow, West London.

After Phoenix’s sentence was passed yesterday, Jaiden’s gran Mandy Matzen shouted in court: “He’s killed two people in his life and that’s all he gets?”

Phoenix hit Jaiden after failing to notice the traffic lights at a crossing had changed to red.

He had become frustrated as his Sainsbury’s delivery lorry was blocked by a car parked illegally on the zig-zag lines of the crossing in Wareham, Dorset.

As he moved around it, he was seen sarcastically clapping a driver he thought had stopped to let him through a tight gap, but who was in fact waiting at the red light.

As Jaiden crossed with his mum RECALLED Driver Dean Phoenix Tess and her mum Sylvia in London yesterday Jaiden nears crossing, on left of pavement. Inset, the toddler

and sister, Phoenix pulled forward having not seen them and hit Jaiden, who died in hospital. Inspector Joe Pardey of Dorset Police said the tragedy was due to “the lack of a few checks that would have been obvious to a competent and careful driver”. Graham Booker, 71, whose car was parked on the zig-zags, last year admitted driving without due care and causing a vehicle to stop within the limits of a crossing. He was fined £265 and got a three-month road ban.
