A “FANTASIST” took part in an astonishing plot to dump an American dementia patient in Britain.

Simon Hayes, 53, left sobbing Roger Curry, 78, in a car park near a hospital in a bid to make him the responsibilty of the care system in the UK.

Hayes, in a fake military uniform and pretending to be from North America, told paramedics he had found Mr Curry face down in a country lane.

But detectives later found out the truth – the frail dementia sufferer was deliberately abandoned after being flown from the US to Britain by family.

Prosecutor Simon Davis said: “[Hayes] was part of a plan to bring Roger from the US and dump him in Hereford.

“The plan was to abandon him so he could receive care from local health care providers. It was clearly planned.”

The court heard how Hayes arranged for Mr Curry and his family to jet from their home in California to the UK and met them at Gatwick airport.

Hayes then drove Mr Curry the roughly 150 miles to Hereford where he abandoned him the next day.

The court heard a woman visiting Hereford County Hospital had spotted the pair and, sensing something was wrong, stopped to check on the older man’s welfare.

Paramedics then arrived on the scene and began tending to Mr Curry.

Hayes refused to give his name, saying he was a Canadian soldier training with the SAS at their nearby HQ.

Worcester crown court heard he then “vanished” without trace.

Mr Curry had no identification on him and could not remember his name.

The case in 2015 baffled UK authorities and sparked a global appeal to find out who he was and how he came to be KEVIN Curry was determined to wash his hands of his ailing father Roger, who suffered from dementia.

His mum Mary Jo also had mild Parkinson’s disease and his relationship with his parents was fractious.

Curry had acted as their carer for several years before he hatched his plot to dump Roger in Britain to be cared for.

Neighbours claimed they saw him
