Packham threat is a cowardly tactic

-

■ SO, TV presenter and wildlife campaigner Chris Packham has been threatened and targeted by trolls after he helped secure a ban on farmers shooting certain ‘pest’ bird species, including crows, pigeons and magpies (Mirror, May 1). A petition also calls for him to be sacked as a Springwatch presenter.

Do these nasty-minded individuals endorse the killing of wild birds and other wild creatures just for the sake of it? If so, shame on them. But, then, it’s far easier to destroy than to create. Well done, Chris.

Alan Baber, Weston-super-Mare Somerset

■ For Chris Packham to receive a death threat for all his hard work and dedication to help protect the environment and save our wildlife just shows what a vile coward the sender must be. As for calling Chris “a nasty piece of work”, the only nasty one is the person who sent the letter. I hope the police find out who is responsible and take the toughest possible action.

Stuart Slinn, Chesterfield, Derbys

■ It is despicable, yet sadly predictable that Chris Packham has received death threats because of his brave, principled stance on animal welfare and saving wildlife. I hope the pathetic individuals responsible are caught and prosecuted.

I am sure the majority share his views. Good for him and all like him.

■ We are incredibly lucky to have someone who cares so much for the environment within the area of the New Forest.

Chris is a local and as such we appreciate what he does to ensure the survival of the birds and ecology of the area, and indeed the rest of the world. We all hope they track down and prosecute anyone that threatens lives. Good luck to Chris and his family.

Lin Francis, New Forest, Hants

■ I support Chris 100% in standing up to these nasty people who only have one thing in mind – to kill innocent birds. I’ve campaigned for 40 years to end the slaughter of crows, pigeons and Canada geese and to let nature take its course.

Victor Rones, Bracknell, Berks

■ I disagree with Chris Packham and Natural England taking legal action to prevent 16 ‘pest’ species of birds from being controlled. I live in London and we are surrounded by predatory species which are forever screeching, crowing and leaving their mess for us to clean up.

Any species that is unable to adapt or compete with these scavengers are facing extinction. These pests and vermin should be controlled to give species that are just hanging on a greater chance of survival.

A Gunerie, North West London

■ Regarding the death threat made to Chris Packham, this is simply a coward’s way of trying to intimidate a person and just shows how sad and pathetic these people are.
