THE SUMMER JOB WAITING FOR VARDY
JAMIE VARDY was unable to continue his goal glut – but there remains a compelling case to see him back in an England shirt this summer.
There was little for Vardy to work on at the Etihad, the Leicester striker shackled by experienced Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany.
Vardy’s resurgence – 11 goals in as many games and nine in eight under Rodgers – has prompted England fans to call for him to come out of international retirement for the Nations League finals.
With Harry Ha Kane not certain to be fit and Marcus Rashford Ra and Callum Wilson W the only viable alternatives if the Spurs man is not, the clamour for Vardy (left) to return is gaining g momentum. After falling out of favour favo under old Foxes boss b Claude Cl Puel, who tried to marginalise him, Vardy is thriving under Brendan Rodgers, who plays to the Yorkshireman’s strengths.
Before Rodgers arrived, Vardy, 32, had endured a frustrating campaign, scoring just nine goals up to the end of February, his natural ebullience drained by his relationship with Puel.
Here, with City dominating possession, he was forced to feed off scraps, although his clever touches and movement – always playing on the shoulder of Kompany and Aymeric Laporte – meant City’s defensive pair had to remain alert.
If Kane recovers in time for the Nations League finals, then there is no need for Vardy – but if not, Gareth Southgate could do a lot worse than give the Leicester man a call.
