Toxic Thatcher blights us today
■ What an excellent article on Margaret Thatcher by Brian Reade (Mirror, May 4). His words exactly echoed my own sentiments about this vile woman.
I can still recall the hopelessness of the Thatcher era 40 years on – the Miners’ Strike pitting communities and families against each other, three million unemployed, homelessness and the Poll Tax to mention but a few of her hateful legacies.
The rot started with her, but what’s so sad is we continue to reap the legacy of her disastrous policies with the decimation of the NHS and public services, and now Brexit.

■ Brian Reade’s article about Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as Prime Minister was absolutely brilliant – both hard hitting and factually accurate. What a pity it didn’t appear before the local elections – perhaps it would have jogged a few memories. I am convinced now, more than ever, that Jeremy Corbyn is the only credible Prime Minister in waiting who can at least make a start to repair the damage of the Thatcher years. ■ Thatcherism has now reached its conclusion. The realisation that individualism is not a viable political ideology, while the get-richquick strategy of selling off the family jewels is a flawed way of running the country, leading to national disaster.
Every right-thinking person saw this coming. It is a tragedy that this nation’s children must live with the consequences of Thatcher’s ideology.

■ The toxicity of the Thatcher years continues long after her departure. She hacked away at the very foundations of our society, taking down the unions, selling off our national assets and our social housing stock.
She made swingeing cuts to services affecting the poorest, weakest and most vulnerable. Nothing has changed.
Let us hope that we are witnessing the demise for at least a generation of this odious league of men and women.

■ Brian Read’s article in reference to Thatcher articulated superbly the views of the hardworking backbone of society in this country.
She was one of the most unfair and vindictive politicians to ever walk this Earth.

■ Thank you, Brian Reade, for your summary of Margaret Thatcher 40 years after she came to power. What I can’t fathom is why so many still vote Tory. John Shale, Wigan
■ I loved Brian Reade’s article on Margaret Thatcher on the 40th anniversary of her victory in the 1979 election. It confirmed everything I remember about her.
She was evil. Brian Morrish, Wokingham, Berks
