High price to pay for EU deadlock

-

■ After weeks of talks with Labour it’s obvious Theresa May has no intention of moving from her red lines.

John McDonnell summed it up when he said he could now understand why the EU found her impossible to deal with.

Her rigidity has resulted in us having to hold elections at a cost of £156million for MEPs who’ll possibly only sit for a couple of months, in addition to the £50million for ferry contracts.

A second referendum is one possibility to get us out of this mess, but a general election is a better option as the parties would be able to set out their intentions with regards to Brexit. Terry Marriott Waterlooville, Hants

■ The European elections will cost us many millions when we should have been out by now. The reason we’re in this state is because most MPs from all parties want us to stay in.

In my opinion, they should all stand down, especially those whose constituents overwhelmingly voted to leave. We need to get out and get back to what the EU was formed for – trade, not politics. As it stands, the top countries pay for the majority of EU member states who contribute little or nothing. Adrian Ottley Southend-on-Sea Essex

■ The European elections will cost £156million, but just compare this to the billions Brexit has already cost in terms of lost trade and investment, not to mention all the bureaucracy and wasted parliamentary time.

Even if by some miracle the Tories and Labour do reach an agreement on a Brexit deal, nothing they come up with will be as good as the deal we have now with the EU.

We need to come to our senses and call the whole thing off.

■ I’ve voted Labour all my life, but this time I’ll be voting for Mr Farage as I want to leave the EU so my beloved country can have its independence back as we had before the Common Market.

As members of the older generation will tell you, these were good times when life was easier and people were friendlier.

■Whether the Labour manifesto for the EU elections commit to a referendum is irrelevant because as long as Corbyn is cosying up to May to push through a dodgy deal, Labour is just another Brexit party.

He should be out telling Brexit-supporting Labour voters how the multi-millionaire Brexiteers will stitch us all up and treat us with contempt. Derek Metson, Bristol

■ I wonder how many people think, as I do, that the EU elections are a total waste of money and a complete farce? Then we have Farage’s Brexit Party which only exists to get us out of the EU. In my view there is just no sense

in voting for any of them. Mick Streets Chesterfield Derbys
