DANGERS Binge boozing BOOZERS here get drunk more regularly than those anywhere else in the world, a global study has revealed.

Brits binge drink almost once a week and get plastered 51 times a year on average.

Researchers said that fewer people in the UK are drinking, but those who are consume a lot.

The 2019 Global Drug Survey polled almost 130,000 people in 36 nations on their recreational drug and alcohol use. Englishspeaking countries led the way in how often their citizens get drunk, with the US, Canada and Australia closely following the UK at the top of the rankings.

The study’s authors said it may be time to bring in guidelines on

MORE than one third of women polled said that they had been taken advantage of sexually while drunk or high.

Most of the incidents took place in private homes by how to get drunk safely, as binge boozers may see the current suggested limit of no more than 14 units a week as “irrelevant”.

Prof Adam Winstock said: “We get told too much is bad – and it is – but current guidelines fail to accept the pleasure of intoxication

someone known to the person, the Global Drug Survey found.

Some 8% of those who had been taken advantage of said that it happened in the last year, and almost all of this group

failed to report it to the police. Four in 10 who did not speak out said it was because they felt partly responsible.

Researcher Alexandra Aldridge said that people may and give little guide on the difference between being a little drunk and a lot drunk, and doing it three to four times a year versus weekly. We need to have that conversation. In the UK, we don’t tend to do moderation.”

Industry body Alcohol Information Partnership said: “The industry remains committed to tackling harmful drinking.” Tell us what you think: yourvoice@mirror.co.uk be reluctant to report incidents because they were intoxicated.

She said: “We need to move away from victim blaming. Telling women to change their behaviour can only go so far.”
