Tories complicit in Yemen horror

-

■ It is with deep regret and sadness that I read your story ‘Child victims of a hell on earth’ (May 13). What’s happening in Yemen is a shameful stain on the entire human race. Allowing this civil war, or proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, is a disgrace to the West.

My heart sank when I read that 120 children are dying every day from starvation.

This is unacceptable in the 21st century and it’s high time the civilised world woke from its slumber and brought an end to this brutal war. I visited Yemen some years ago – it used to be a beautiful country with wonderful people. Now it pains me every time I see the suffering and misery on the television. Suresh Abboodass

■ Well done for highlighting the situation in Yemen because this forgotten war rarely appears on our TV screens. The conflict has been raging since 2014, innocent children are being slaughtered and a quarter of a million people are suffering famine.

The PM will never shake off Jeremy Corbyn’s accusation that she’s complicit in this bloodshed by continuing to support and sell weapons the Saudis. It’s utterly shameful. Britain must get behind Corbyn and fight for peace and justice for the innocent victims.

Well done to the Daily Mirror for putting the Yemen crisis on your front page. The arming of Saudi Arabia by the British Conservative Government is an indelible stain on this nation’s reputation and has made us an international laughing stock on human rights.

How can we lecture anybody while we participate in this crime against humanity? Has this Government no shame left at all? Sadly, it appears not.

Ian Brown, Feltham, Middx

■ You don’t sell bombs and guns to a dictatorship and expect them to be framed over the mantelpiece. They are used to kill and maim. Theresa May’s gang of Tories are arming the Saudi-led coalition and this makes them complicit in the bloodshed that’s sweeping Yemen with 120 children dying every day as the bloody crisis escalates.

We need a PM who is strong and willing to take the moral high ground. Unfortunately, Theresa May is not that person.

Shaun Shute Gloucester ■ It was horrendous to discover boys as young as 12 are being kidnapped and recruited by the Houthis to fight in the civil war raging in the Yemen (Mirror, May 14). Thousands of children have been used as nothing more than fodder by these cruel and merciless insurgents.

I can’t help but feel a deep sense of anguish that this has been allowed to happen. It should be condemned by world leaders and every effort must be made to end the conflict. Michael Smith, Chatham, Kent

■ The people who make these terrible weapons should be surrounded by pictures of the results of their efforts. All the workers who make the harbingers of death and suffering could be far better employed building prefabs or modernising our road and rail systems. Perhaps we could export such houses or hospitals? Our leaders could negotiate the sale of these goods for the benefit of the world. G Williams Tuffley, Glos
