KDB’S SORE POINT TO PROVE

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

KEVIN DE BRUYNE admitted he had a point to prove in his FA Cup final cameo after enduring an injury-ravaged season.

De Bruyne came off the bench in the second half to score one and set up another in Manchester City’s 6-0 rout of Watford on Saturday. It meant the £54million midfielder ended a difficult season on a high after five separate injuries sabotaged his campaign and saw him start just 11 Premier League games. Asked if his electric appearance went some way to making up for his frustrating campaign, De Bruyne said: “It does, because I wanted to end it in a good way.

“It’s been a stop-start season for me and it’s been difficult at times.

“I wanted to show people I’m still the same player, I just had some bad luck this season.”

De Bruyne said he will relish the challenge of helping to keep City, Premier League champions by a single point, at the top next season – but only after a long summer break.

“Everyone should enjoy the break because obviously it’s been a hard two years for everyone,” said the 27-year-old Belgian international (left, with Garbiel Jesus). “You had last season, then the World Cup, and then this season so I think everyone deserves a good rest this summer.”

Asked if City deserved to be recognised as the best English side of all time after completing a domestic treble, he said: “Luckily I don’t ever have to debate that. It’s great to be in contention, to be named with other teams.

“But it’s impossible to compare generations, it’s impossible to compare styles of football.

“Football changes all the time, like every other sport.

“It’s great to be there. It means you’re part of one of the best-ever teams in the Premier League – and that doesn’t happen to a lot of people.”
