The Queen saw a Second World War, ration book and spoke of her childhood growing up in Windsor. She said: “As a Sunday treat we had some sweeties, but we were lucky – we had a farm.” MILLIONS of Britons face a Bank Holiday washout following this week’s warm weather, forecasters have warned.

Changeable and unsettled conditions are predicted from Saturday, bringing showers and bands of rain across the country.

It spells the end of the fine sunny weather that pushed up temperatures over the past few days.

A Met Office spokeswoman said there is likely to be “sunshine and showers for most places” over the three-day break.

She added: “The weather is looking very changeable. We are looking at cloudy skies at times. Some areas will have rain on Saturday, others on Sunday or Monday. There’s a lot of uncertainty.”

Temperatures are likely to peak at around 20C on Saturday, compared to highs of 22C to 23C in midweek.

By Monday, they will drop to the mid to low teens across much of the country. Southern England can expect some sunny weather and higher temperatures up to 20C.

Meteorologist Mark Wilson said: “The temperature will be pleasant but not quite as high as we have been seeing. There’s going to be much more cloud around.

“That cloud cover could be thick enough to bring showers and some spells of rain, and we are likely to see bands of rain spreading their way eastwards across the UK.

“Unfortunately the UK is not going to be particularly sunny compared to parts of Europe.”

Highways England is lifting 700 miles of roadworks to help ease the pressure on major roads and motorways as people head off for a break.

And major engineering works will disrupt services to London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street.
