Sarri has tried & succeeded but even that is not enough for Roman & demanding Chelsea fans

- BY JOHN CROSS Chief Football Writer

CHELSEA fans have become so spoiled during the Roman Abramovich reign it is hardly surprising they become frustrated.

The Blues have won the Champions League, the Europa League, five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and three League Cups since Abramovich took over in 2003. That is a pretty good advert for their revolving door policy on managers, which finds Maurizio Sarri the latest to be heading for the exit.

But this one is harder to understand because Sarri has guided Chelsea to third place, he tries to play good football and could still win a European trophy.

No wonder Sarri finds it difficult to understand why his future is up for discussion and the even greater mystery as to why he appears to be on his way out.

Fans of other Premier League clubs are baffled and yet the argument against him is his tactics have not worked, he has no Plan B, his football is one dimensional and he has not tried to engage with the fans, never going on to the pitch and rarely acknowledging them.

That disconnect is at the heart of the problem, along with his failure to give young players more of a chance. That will become a bigger issue next season, with the club having to operate under a transfer ban.

There must be sympathy with Sarri who, like a few before him, will be in and out in the blink of an eye.

But when the alternative appears to be Frank Lampard, a crowd favourite and club legend, there is only ever going to be one choice for a group of fans used to getting their own way.
