6am The PM wakes to the news that 34 Conservati­ve Tory MPs would vote against the Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB) – despite making a new offer to win support the day before. 10:20am A former close ally of Theresa May, Vicky Ford MP calls on the PM to go.

11:15am Cabinet ministers brief that they may try to topple her. 11:48am The ‘Pizza Club’ of Leave voting ministers meet to discuss concerns with Mrs May. Noon Theresa May clashes with Jeremy Corbyn at PMQs – Tory benches are basically empty. 12:55 Theresa May begins the statement defending her ‘new’ Brexit offer to Parliament. But other than Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom, and Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay, Cabinet Ministers abandon the chamber. 13:06 Mrs May confirms that the WAB will be published on Friday. She says if the bill is rejected it will leave “deadlock and division”. The vote is set for June 7.

13:18 Jeremy Corbyn calls for general election, saying May’s time has run out.

13:55 George Osborne, the Evening Standard editor, former chancellor says a Cabinet coup against May is under way. His paper endorses the Lib Dems in today’s EU elections.

14:21 Scottish Secretary David Mundell asks for an urgent meeting with Mrs May.

14:30 She finishes statement. 15:47 Reports that Pizza Club ministers, led by Mrs Leadsom, tell PM she must pull the WAB. 16:07 Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt reportedly asks for meeting with Mrs May.

16:08 Executive of the Conservati­ve backbench 1922 Committee meet.

16:10 Reports of a group of junior ministers visiting Chief Whip Julian Smith threatenin­g to all quit unless Mrs May goes. 16:30 Sajid Javid reportedly asks to meet PM to ask her to remove vote on the second referendum from WAB.

16:40 Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt reportedly tells Mrs May she can’t back her deal. 17:00 1922 Committee meeting of backbench MPs begins.

17:18 A senior No10 source insists there will be “no resignatio­n” by the PM tonight. 17:46 Chief Whip arrives to meet the ‘22 Executive and leaves two minutes later.

18:20 MPs file into ‘22 meeting. 18:26 ‘22 Chair Graham Brady confirms Theresa May given stay of execution and that she will see him on Friday.

19.35pm Leader of the House of Common’s Andrea Leadsom resigns, signalling her own leadership bid.
