A WOMAN who escaped one of the US’s most prolific killers watched as he was executed – but said he did not even look at her as he died.
Bobby Joe Long murdered 10 women in an eight-month spree before kidnapping and raping 17-year-old Lisa McVey.
After getting away she helped bring him to justice and now, 34 years on, was in the front row of the public gallery as he was given a lethal jab.
But Long, 56, kept his eyes shut and did not say a word after being taken into the execution chamber at Florida State Prison.
Lisa, now called Lisa Noland and a police officer, said: “I wanted to look him in the eye. I wanted to be the first person he saw. Unfortunately, he didn’t open his eyes.”
Long terrorised Tampa Bay in 1984 and 1985 as women’s bodies were found, often in gruesome positions. Most were strangled, some had their throats slit and others were bludgeoned to death.
Police had few clues until Lisa was kidnapped as she cycled home from her job at a Krispy Kreme doughnut store. He held her in his flat and repeatedly raped her but she persuaded him to let her go by claiming she was the sole carer to a sick parent. She led police to Long, who admitted to the 10 murders and to raping around 40 women. He got 28 life terms, and a death sentence for the murder of 22-year-old Michelle Simms. He died 12 minutes after the injection, following a final meal of roast beef, bacon and chips.
Lisa said she wept after watching him die, adding: “The peace that came over me is a remarkable feeling.” Also in the gallery was Frank Elliott, the brother of victim Vicky Elliott, wearing a shirt printed with the faces of the 10 victims and the words: “The ones that matter.”
