Brexit Party sends back

-

THE EU’s top Brexit negotiator has warned Tory leadership hopefuls there will be no further talks on Theresa May’s thrice-rejected deal.

Candidates vying to succeed her as Prime Minister have vowed to go back to bloc leaders and renegotiate her hated withdrawal pact.

But Michel Barnier told them bluntly: “If the UK wants to leave in an orderly manner, this treaty is the only option. If the choice is to leave without a deal, fine. If the choice is to stay in the EU, also fine.

“But if the choice is still to leave the EU in an orderly manner, this treaty is the only option. This is all that our legal constraints allow.”

The hammer blow to hopes of improving Mrs May’s deal came as the outgoing PM enjoyed a Cricket World Cup match between England and South Africa at The Oval in South London.

Chancellor Philip Hammond signalled he would support a second referendum if MPs are unable to deliver Brexit.

He said: “If we get to the point where Parliament cannot resolve the situation, it will have to be remitted back to the people. I am not sure a general election can resolve the question for the simple reason that both the main political parties are divided on the issues.

“This is a division that runs not between the parties but through the parties. We need a period of calm now before contemplating a general election.

“My strong preference is for Parliament to resolve this but if Parliament can’t resolve it, Parliament will have to decide how we remit it back to the people, whether it is in the form of a general election, or a referendum.”

He also warned the 11 candidates against making promises to slash taxes to boost support among grassroots Tories. Dominic Raab has pledged to cut income tax by a penny a year to just 15p in the pound for the basic rate – which critics claim would cost £25billion.

Mr Hammond said: “I hope this NIGEL Farage’s Brexit Party has sent back at least £1,000 in donations because the cash may have come from a foreign donor.

Electoral Commission figures show the gift was returned between January 1 and March 31. Earlier this month we revealed loopholes that could allow foreign donors to pump untraceable money into the party.

People giving more than £500 must be on the electoral register.

A Brexit Party source said: “We did our “Nostalgia serves no purpose in politics. In my country, too, some politicians still prefer to live in the past. But there were, also, people voting for Brexit who simply don’t want to accept rules.” “Most importantly, there are many people who feel abandoned. They feel that the quality of public services, healthcare, transport, is worsening. We must listen to these fears and address them.”

“Some based in the City of London voted to leave, as they don’t want to accept the Union’s regulations on trading; they want to speculate freely and the Union doesn’t allow them to.”

contest does not degenerate into a competition to see who can make the biggest spending or tax-cutting pledges.

“We’ve just gone through a painful period rebuilding public finances after the crisis in the last decade under Labour. I don’t think anybody would want to see us throw away the achievements of that last decade.”

Mr Hammond, seen as a Remainer who a new PM could send to the backbenches, also appeared to rule job”. They could not confirm the reason for the rejection but suggested the donor was either ineligible or “undesirable”.

Election rules require donations over £7,500 to be declared. Rejected gifts over £500 must also be declared but the source does not have to be revealed.

Mr Farage has said the vast majority of cash comes from donations under the reporting threshold. Anyone can pay £25 to become a “registered supporter” of the
