Tributes to Weatherfie­ld corner shop boss

RED is the most popular colour for bedrooms, a study has found.

It topped the charts on 13%, followed closely by pink, light green, dark green then purple.

Only 4% said they used white, pushing it out of the top 10, bedmaker Rest Assured found.

Louise Boden, of Rest Assured, said some use their bedroom as a way to “express their personalit­y and love of colour”.

But she added: “Many use it as a sanctuary.” Irene in the 70s IRENE Sutcliffe, who played Corrie’s Maggie Clegg during a glittering screen and stage career, has died.

The actress passed away at the age of 88. She was best known for playing Maggie Clegg, who ran Weatherfie­ld’s corner shop from 1968 to 1974.

Irene had already appeared in numerous West End and TV With Ron production­s, including Dixon of Dock Green, before she made her debut on ITV’s cobbles. Maggie was Betty Turpin’s younger sister in the soap and married to alcoholic Les Clegg.

When they split she was wooed by Len Fairclough and Alf Roberts, before getting hitched to Ron Cooke, played by Eric Lander. In their final storyline, the couple left to start a new life in Africa.

As Maggie, centre, with first husband Les (John Sharp) & Elsie Tanner (Pat Phoenix) ironmonger’s daughter Irene appeared in classic TV shows such as All Creatures Great & Small in 1989, and Miss Marple in 1987, as well as Hetty Wainthropp Investigat­es 10 years later.

She also played a waitress in the cult 1987 film, Withnail and I.

More recently she starred in an episode of Doc Martin in 2007 and BBC daytime soap Doctors in 2010. In 2015 she portrayed The King’s Mother in US soap The Royals. Her career lasted for more than six decades.

A Coronation Street spokeswoma­n said yesterday: “As Maggie Clegg, the owner of the corner shop, Irene Sutcliffe will always be remembered as a big part of Coronation Street history.

“Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.”
