Johnson, of Liverpool, said: “You’ve got to savour these moments, I never want it to end.

“We’ve had the best time, a once-ina-lifetime experience. I’m on cloud nine now but I know I’ll have a hangover tomorrow and probably the day after, too. But it’s all been incredible.

“It’s been a wonderful atmosphere. There’s been no animosity with the Tottenham fans – they’ve been great.”

In Liverpool fans draped in flags also danced through the night with some jumping on the roof of a bus outside Anfield, others jumped on car roofs and straddled traffic lights.

Liverpool midwife Ann Spofforth warned there may be a baby boom in nine months’ time. She tweeted: “Think I may book annual leave 9 months from now.” Celeb fans also tweeted their joy, with actors Damian Lewis and David Morrissey posing for a selfie on the plane home.

Billions and Homeland actor Lewis wrote: “Morning after. GET IN.” and The Walking Dead’s Morrissey, tweeted: “We’ve won it six times !!!!!! ”. Another fan, Kev Walsh, from Merseyside, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen anything like this in 20 to 30 years. Jurgen Klopp’s up there with the best of them.

“Everyone was screaming, shouting and started singing and didn’t stop singing until after midnight. It was a fantastic night. Today the city is full. I’ve never seen so many people.”

Huge queues also waited outside the Liverpool FC store all day to have names added to shirts.

Proudly wearing his Liverpool shirt, John Ormerod was among thousands creating a carnival atmosphere.

He said: “I couldn’t risk going to Madrid without a ticket so I couldn’t miss them coming back to Liverpool with the trophy. The atmosphere is just as good as last night.”

Ed Atkins, of Oxford, watched the game in Liverpool.

He said: “This is probably the next best thing to being in Madrid.”
