Dejected Joshua UK, he turned the boxing world on its head with a seventh-round stoppage.

Joshua – who is 6ft 6in and tipped the scales at 17st 9lb – looked like he was heading for victory in round three when he knocked Ruiz down.

But the heavier man got to his feet and floored the Brit twice before the end of the round.

Ruiz put Joshua down twice more in round seven and the ref decided enough was enough.

More than 15,000 had travelled from the UK to watch the Englishman’s debut in the US. The crowd, which was largely supporting 29-year-old Joshua, went from thrilled to stunned by the time the fight was over. Celebs at the famed venue included Ruiz wins Fans Corden and Redknapp TV funnyman James Corden and former England footballer Jamie Redknapp.

Ruiz, also 29, earned the respect of millions and walked off with the WBA, IBF and WBO versions of the world title that Joshua had held.

The delighted winner said: “I just feel so good, man. This is what I’ve been dreaming about, this is what I’ve been working hard for. I can’t believe I just made my dreams come true.”

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: “It’s an absolute shocker… He’s gutted, the team’s gutted. What can you do? You dust yourself down and you go again.”

Fan Kenny Keith was among those who took a light-hearted view, saying: “Ruiz has inspired a generation of sloppy dad bods like me. I’m going to challenge the 6ft 5in bouncer at the pub tonight.”

I just feel so good. I can’t believe I just made my dreams come true
