Boris battle bus is not the only issue

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ The lies on the Brexit battle bus played a huge part for the Leave campaign (Mirror, May 30). Referendums, like elections, should be fought on a level playing field based on truth, not lies.

It is absurd for Johnson to allege this legal bid is a political stunt brought about by Remainers. It is a very serious matter indeed. Boris is a deeply controversial character who seems to care only about himself, and it is a joke that he is jostling for the vacant Prime Minister’s position. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

■ How ridiculous that Boris Johnson is to be taken to court for allegedly telling lies during the 2016 referendum campaign.

They should be taking nearly all politicians to court for the same thing because it is very rare that you hear the truth spoken in Parliament these days, especially during Prime Ministers Questions. When I voted to leave the EU I wasn’t concerned with anything except getting out and getting back to a Great Britain. Frances Gilbert Barnstaple, North Devon

■ So Boris Johnson is leading the race to become the new Tory leader.

Every time he opens his mouth he is either insulting the people of another country, giving the wrong information or making the country a laughing stock. Boris isn’t interested in leading the country or protecting its citizens – he’s just interested in helping himself and his Tory cronies. If he wins, God help this country and its people because Boris certainly won’t.

Catherine McChleery, Coventry

■ While I agree with the judge’s ruling that Boris Johnson can face trial for allegations he knowingly lied to the public about the £350m battle bus claims, surely the whole of Parliament should be in court with him when one considers the falsehoods told by MPs of all parties in the past? I have no doubt the lies are still flowing about Brexit. Henry John, Newport, Gwent

■ I’m not a Boris fan but it’s ridiculous to single him out over the lies told during the referendum campaign when both sides were at it with spin and obfuscation. We need a complete overhaul of what are considered acceptable standards for public officials to adhere to because at present most are falling short. D Shaw, Oldham, Gtr Manchester

■ Surely the “nasty party” is not going to get even nastier by inflicting Boris Johnson on the country as PM? His record shows what a liability he would be. Cameron and May have both been a disaster and achieved precisely nothing between them.

It’s not another Tory leadership election we need, it’s a change of government – and we need it now. Vince McAllister

Ely, Cambs

■ If Boris becomes the next PM he will be handing the next general election to Labour on a plate. Like America with Donald Trump in charge, Britain will become the laughing stock of the world.

M Lugger, Exeter
