£40m wasted on unwanted Trump

-

■ It’s an absolute disgrace that we are continually told there’s no money, yet it’s costing us £40 million to protect Trump and his 1,000 staff on his state visit - the most expensive in history, so we’re told (Mirror, June 3).

And to add insult to injury the US ambassador Woody Johnson says the involvement of American firms in the NHS would be part of any trade deal. This must not be allowed to happen. We don’t want Trump here and we don’t need him telling us what and what not to do.

Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

■ Trump should have to pay for the extra security costs himself – £40million from a country whose people are forced to use food banks or who can’t get to see a GP because of the NHS funding crisis is diabolical. This money could have been used to keep vital services running, or fund Brexit.

Trump is not well liked here and should not have been invited for a state visit. And why does he need to bring his grown up children and extended family too?

Angelina Folds, Blackpool, Lancs

■ How very decent of Trump to tell our country who the next PM should be and that a massive trade deal is on the table after Brexit.

Perhaps we should cut out the middle men – ie the electorate – and bow down to him with what little of our political dignity remains. How humiliating for us to toady up to Trump with this extravagant showpiece of Collin Rossini, Dovercourt, Essex

■ Why on earth are we spending £40 million for the security for Trump’s unwanted state visit? If he wanted one, then as one of the richest men in one of the world’s richest countries he should have offered to pay for it.

He doesn’t need an entourage of 1,000 people either. It’s diabolical that this is happening when the NHS and police are on their knees through funding cuts.

David Marsden, Bridlington, East Yorks

■ The visit of Donald Trump has highlighted the lack of statesmanship shown by many of our politicians who have refused to attend a state dinner with him.
