BARRYMORE’S SOB STORIES
Shamed entertainer moans death scandal cost him career
MICHAEL Barrymore says he was “eaten up and spat out” after the death of Stuart Lubbock at his home.
Appearing on ITV’s Life Stories, the Strike It Lucky host, 67, talks openly about the scandal that brought an end to his television career.
Asked by host Piers Morgan about what responsibility he takes for Stuart’s death, Barrymore says: “I was responsible for allowing people to come back to my house and then go out to the pool.
“There’s no children. Stuart was, what, 31? You would assume they was capable of looking after themselves.”
Barrymore continues: “You know some people say, ‘You did not show any remorse.’
“But the word remorse applies to when you have actually done something horrific. So how do you show remorse?”
CRITICISED
Butcher Stuart was found dead in the swimming pool at Barrymore’s home in Roydon, Essex, on March 31, 2001.
The entertainer has been criticised for leaving the scene before police had arrived and for refusing to answer questions at the inquest about any drug use at the party that night.
Speaking about this, he says: “I f***ed up. What more do you want? I f***ed up, I’m sorry.
“I gave Stuart nothing. The Es [ecstasy pills] he apparently had at the club. There were no Es at my house. I had a joint with the guys. If there’s cocaine but he didn’t get it from me…
“I have not come on here to gain anything or to do anything other than to do the show. I am quite happy to talk about it.
“I’ve been eaten up and spat out. It does not matter what happens to me. I am innocent.
“I am not 99.9% innocent. I am 100% innocent. And I am entitled to walk around with my head held high.”
