Archaic Ann has no place in politics

-

■ What a disgrace Ann Widdecombe is to claim science may find an “answer” for homosexuality (Mirror, June 3). This type of archaic view has no place in politics in the 21st century.

To think that people actually voted for this ridiculous woman to be MEP for the South West beggars belief. She is an embarrassment, not only to herself but to the people of this country whom she will represent in Brussels.

What must the EU think? Together Farage and Widdecombe want to take this country back to the Dark Ages.

Julie Lester, Liverpool

■ Is anyone really surprised at former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe’s gay science comments? The Conservatives have fostered a culture that harasses and demonises the weak and vulnerable in our society, while at the same time kowtowing to big companies that don’t pay their fair share of taxes. So, no, Ms Widdecombe’s remarks don’t surprise me when she was a Tory MP for many years. We need to stand up to the bullies and offer a helping hand to those who are marginalised in our society.

■ There is no doubt some in the Brexit Party are sincere in their views, but it is very worrying for all of us the extent to which a squalid rabble-rouser like Nigel Farage is able to whip the foreigner hating, football hooligan elements of our country into such a frenzy, with his brand of bile and xenophobia. Then we have Ann Widdecombe claiming science may be able to stop people being gay. What a dream team they make. Gwyn Evans, South East London

■ Regarding Ann Widdecombe’s bigoted remarks about being gay, this woman is a relic who has no place in British politics in the 21st century – a bit like her Brexit Party pal Nigel Farage. What is really worrying is that people actually voted for them in the EU elections. The sooner they are put out to grass the safer it will be for all of us.

■ We must be embarrassed for Ann Widdecombe, with her outrageous views on Britain’s LBGT community of which I am proud to be a member. For an intelligent woman, she is unbelievably stupid with her comments. You are a dinosaur, Ann, and should not be in politics. Darren F Milner Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs

■ Shame on those who voted for the bigoted Ann Widdecombe. Your sexuality is not something to be “cured”. I am disgusted with this Victorian attitude. It’s about time she and her old-fashioned ideas retired. Richard Davies, via Facebook

■ The opinions of archaic individuals such as Ann Widdecombe are well past their sell-by date and serve no useful purpose in this day and age.
