BEM awards for survivors of Holocaust

SURPRISE Ruzena Levy HOLOCAUST survivors were awarded British Empire medals for their services to education.

Czech-born Ruzena Levy, 89, could not speak of her ordeal for decades but has since visited hundreds of schools.

The Auschwitz survivor’s story is now part of the curriculum for students in South London.

She said: “The honour is a great surprise.”

Gabrielle Keenaghan, 92, George Hans Vulkan, 89, Ann and Bob Kirk, 90 and 94, and Ernest Simon, 89, were also awarded medals.

Walter Kammerling, 95, sent to the UK on Kindertran­sport from Austria, gets a medal too. WINNING the role of the Queen seems to have worked wonders for Olivia Colman.

The actress, who has also played the Queen Mother and Queen Anne, leads the world of showbiz in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Olivia, 45, who is made a CBE, hailed the other recipients, saying: “I’m thrilled, delighted and humbled to be in the company of these incredible people, most of whom have been nowhere near as visible as I have, but should be – and hopefully now will be. It’s such an honour.”

Olivia plays the Queen in series three of Netflix drama The Crown, due out this year. She ACTRESS Cush Jumbo Rock singer Elvis Costello poses in 1977 won an Oscar in February for her role as Queen Anne in movie The Favourite.

There are OBEs for rock star Elvis Costello, 64, The Good Wife actress Cush Jumbo, 33, and Chief Scout Bear Grylls, 45. Comedian and TV presenter Griff Rhys Jones, 65, also gets an OBE. As does Undertones frontman Feargal Sharkey, 60. TV historian Dan Snow, 40, is made an MBE, while authors Joanna Trollope, 75, and Lee Child, 64, have been honoured with CBEs. In sport, Women’s British Open golf champ Georgia Hall, 23, and ex-Queens Park Rangers manager Chris Ramsey, 57, receive MBEs. Chief Scout Bear Grylls has received an OBE
