No England appearances FROM BACK PAGE dropped John Stones after his errors in the semi-final defeat by Holland and who will carry on dumping players if standards fall.

Southgate (above) is intent on winning the European Championship next summer but says England must find an “extra edge” if they are to progress and become winners.

“I think we created an environment that took a bit of pressure off the players and we want them to relax, to express themselves,” said Southgate.

“But there now comes a point where we’ve got to demand more. We’ve got to find another edge.

“If people can’t cope with it then they’re not going to be able to cope with it under pressure.

“I’ve reflected a lot over the last 48 hours because I’ve probably been awake for 47 of them! I’ve got to make sure that I’m constantly raising the bar with this group and we don’t accept any kind of sloppiness to creep in.

“I think the players want driving and they are starting to own a bit of that themselves, which is really important.

“I think what we’ve got to do is keep driving, keep pushing the standards.”

England reconnected with the nation at last summer’s World Cup but had to be content with third place at the Nations League after falling in the semi-finals to the Dutch.

“We’ve brought incredible support, we want to deliver for them, and we have to make sure that we are 100 per cent right in everything we do,” Southgate said. “To get to the last four is obviously harder than the last eight and that’s what we want to do. If we want to be a team that’s happy just to float along in quarter-finals then I don’t think too many of this lot want to be involved in it.

“I’m not making excuses for the age of the team because we’ve decided to go that route but they’ll be better for all the experiences they’ve had with us in the last couple of years and the games they’ve had at a high level for their clubs. All of those things are going to help them become winners.” MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to increase their offer to £50million for Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Reds have had a £40m bid for Wan-Bissaka rejected by Palace, but are ready to up it by £10m for the England Under-21 international.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified Wan-Bissaka, 21, as the man to fill the right-back void at United long-term.

Antonio Valencia’s exit, Ashley Young’s age and Diogo Dalot’s relative inexperience have led United to pursue the Eagles star.

Although Palace value Wan-Bissaka at £60m, United believe they can land him for £50m.

Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, should David De Gea join Paris Saint-Germain.
