VETERAN DJ Bob Harris is taking a break from radio because of a tear in his aorta that could have killed him.

He told yesterday how his high fitness from daily walking probably saved his life.

The host of Radio 2’s The Country Show With Bob Harris announced he was “sorry to say” he will be off air for a “few weeks”.

The legendary broadcaster, 73 – known as “Whispering Bob” for his quiet style – said: “Ten days ago, out walking, I suffered a tear to my aorta, known as an aortic dissection.

“The aorta is the M1 of the body and any damage is regarded as extremely serious.

“For the past few years I’ve walked on average five miles a day and I’m convinced the fitness level I’ve achieved in that time helped save my life.”

In victims of his condition, blood races through the rip to the large vessel branching off the heart. This surge separates the aorta’s inner and middle layers.

If not treated fast, death can result. There is also the risk of organ damage or stroke.

The dad of eight told fans: “My tear was an incredibly scary moment. I am massively indebted to the ambulance crew who attended so promptly, the intensive care team and the consultants at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford – as well as to my wife Trudie and my wonderful family, who have rallied round me with huge love and support.

“I’m not exactly sure when I’ll be on air again but I’m on the road to recovery now and will be back playing music for you on Radio 2 as soon as possible. Thank you for everything.”

Bob, awarded an OBE in 2011 for services to music broadcasting, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2007.

Last year he presented a special edition of The Old Grey Whistle Test, the iconic BBC TV music programme he fronted from 1972 to 1978.

Radio 2 head Lewis Carnie said: “We wish Bob a very fast recovery and look forward to welcoming him back when he’s ready.” The Country Show, broadcast each Thursday evening, will be hosted by Paul Sexton tonight and on June 20.

Radio 2 DJ Johnnie Walker, 74, returned in March from a break for heart treatment.
