Make Tories pay for OAP betrayal

-

■ Is it just a coincidence that the withdrawal of free TV licences for the over-75s, except for those on Pension Credit, came a few days after the Peterborough by-election?

The Tories would have been lucky to get any votes at all if this had been announced a week earlier.

There are an awful lot of people over 75 just getting by and now they face this extra expense. I seem to remember Theresa May pledging to improve the lot of those who fall into the ‘just about managing’ category.

Another Tory betrayal. When the general election comes, surely the grey army won’t forget.

Ian Marshall, Colchester, Essex

■ We can now see further proof of just how much the Conservatives can be trusted on their manifesto promises with the announcement of end of free TV licences for most pensioners, despite their efforts to deflect the blame onto the BBC. They should note that anything taken away from present day pensioners will also been taken away from the younger generation who are the pensioners of the future. Let’s hope the electorate remember the Tories’ lies and punish them at the next election.

J Randall Morley, West Yorks

■ As a former community psychiatric nurse for the over-65s, I saw many who lived alone and some days the only voices they heard came from the TV. During my visits many would talk about things they watched the previous night.

They were able to keep up with the latest news and always looked forward to special broadcasts such as royal weddings.

The decision to means test this benefit is quite heartless.

Brian Derbyshire Little Sutton, Cheshire

■ How two-faced and backstabbing the Tories have become. One minute they are standing alongside the people who fought wars for the freedom of future generations and the next they are penalising them.

The decision to take away the free TV licence for over-75s is despicable and one which I believe will see them commit political suicide.

I only hope the country shows them exactly they think of them at the next election.

Jennifer Phelps Somerton, Somerset

■ I’m calling on all pensioners to hit the Tories at the ballot box for promising to keep free licences and then breaking that promise.

This Government cannot be trusted and needs to be booted out. Don’t accept any more lies.

Vince McAllister, Ely, Cambs

■ This is one more reason why 3.7 million pensioners and the country should not elect the lying millionaire Tory Party back into government. The country should demand a general election as soon as possible. Let the people decide who should be the next PM, not the blue rinse Tory membership.

K R Moreton, Draycott, Derbys

■ I am outraged that the free TV licence for the over-75s is to be revoked after the Conservatives made a promise in 2017. I will never vote for them again. They are absolutely despicable.

B Woodward, Biggleswade, Beds
