JO Brand is being investigated by police after joking about throwing acid at politicians.

The comments on a BBC Radio 4 show are being assessed by the Metropolitan Police after an allegation of incitement to violence.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage led criticism of the joke, made on Victoria Coren Mitchell’s Heresy programme on Tuesday night.

In a tweet on Wednesday, he wrote: “This is incitement of violence and the police need to act.”

But it is understood the complaint to police did not come from Mr Farage or the Brexit Party.

Scotland Yard said: “Police have received an allegation of incitement to violence that was reported to the MPS on 13 June. The allegation CARRYING any excess weight at all could contribute to heart and blood vessel illnesses, a study suggests.

It was previously thought that only those classed as overweight or obese – with a body mass index of 25 or over – were at risk of disease.

The researchers studied data from relates to comments made on a radio programme. There have been no arrests and enquiries are ongoing.”

Last month, a milkshake was thrown at Mr Farage in Newcastle.

On Heresy, Brand, 61, said: “Why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?

“I’m not going to do it, it’s purely a fantasy, but I think milkshakes are pathetic, I honestly do, sorry.”

Ofcom has had 65 complaints. Last night the BBC said it would edit Brand’s comments out of the show on catch-up service iPlayer.

“Heresy is a long-running comedy where, as the title implies and as our listeners know, panellists often say things which are deliberately BBC SPOKESMAN ON JOKE MADE DURING SHOW 367,703 men and women aged 40-69. “Comedy will always push boundaries, but on this occasion we have decided to edit the programme. We regret any offence we have caused.”

Theresa May’s spokesman said yesterday: “The PM has been repeatedly clear that politicians should be able to go about their work and campaign without harassment, intimidation or abuse.”

A BBC source said: “Jo is very much part of the Radio 4 family – she will continue to be so.”
