The North can go west as far as Tories care

- PAUL ROUTLEDGE

They starve the region of investment and pour cash into the South

THE next Tory PM will be a Southerner from a southern seat with a southern mentality. Like the last two.

He - and it looks very likely to be Blarney Boris - won’t have the faintest clue what it’s like for millions who live and work in the North.

Up ’ere, where Tory party members are as rare as hens’ teeth, he’ll be helped into power by a tiny fraction of the voting population.

He won’t care. The working class can kiss his arse – he’s got the foreman’s job at last.

Seedy politicians now vying to succeed Mrs May let the steel industry of Redcar die. Their party closed the pits. They starved the region of investment, pouring money into the wealthy South.

They closed Sure Start centres. They sacked teachers, school assistants, police officers and PCSOs.

They closed hospital beds and brought in private contractors to slash wages and degrade conditions.

Want me to go on? OK. They made council workers redundant and cut services for children, the old and vulnerable. They axed our museums and tourist attractions. They’re robbing a million northern pensioners of their free TV licences.

Yet front-runners cynically trumpet their support for the media campaign Power Up The North which was launched this week.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the filthy-rich assassin of the NHS, pledges to deliver HS2 and the Northern Powerhouse Rail – the Tory fantasy east-west link – and “turbocharge” the economy.

London ex-banker Sajid Javid bleats “I hear you!” to northerners, from his constituency in leafy Worcestershire.

Boris Johnson famously accused Liverpool people of “wallowing in victimhood” after the Hillsborough tragedy. He also sucks up to hard-line Loyalists in Northern Ireland, but knows nowt about northern England.

The airy-fairy promises of wannabe premiers are worthless, just like their manifesto commitment to keep free licences for the over-75s.

Whichever of these sordid, power-mad Tories gets the keys to No 10, he won’t be the choice of the people of the North.
