Tories won’t learn lessons of Grenfell

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ WELL done on your Grenfell: Never Again campaign. It’s abhorrent that two years after the deaths of 72 people some of the families have still not been found permanent homes while 340 tower blocks are still clad with combustible material (Mirror, June 17).

It’s typical of the Tories that their promises to take action have come to nothing. They don’t care about the poor who live in social housing – never have and never will.

We need The Mirror and Jeremy Corbyn to carry on the fight to get justice for Grenfell.

■ Two years after the Grenfell fire, it seems nothing has been done to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. Thousands are still living in unsafe homes and the Tories continue to cut our fire services despite the risks. Theresa May said there would be action on the flammable ACM cladding that caused the fire, but the Government is still “conducting tests”. So much for the promises of action. Talk is cheap lives are more important. Dave Mellor, Warrington

■ On the two-year anniversary of Grenfell, Tory leadership hopeful Boris Johnson tweeted “... we stand with the families and friends of those who lost their lives.” As London Mayor, Johnson rejected the call by the City Hall Labour Group to include i funds to retrofit sprinkler systems in residential housing for risk groups in his 2013- 14 budget. And in 2014 he presided over the closure of 10 London fire stations and cut more than 500 firefighter posts to save money. Actions have consequences, Mr Johnson.

■ Despite all the promises, it seems no lessons have been learnt from the Grenfell disaster. Thousands of people are still living in potential high rise death traps and the cuts to fire services continue putting more lives at risk – all because this pennypinching Tory Government puts money before lives. We need a General Election now and a Labour Government in power who will look out for the ordinary people.

■ The truth is your campaign should not be needed, just as Grenfell need never have happened. It’s a travesty that thousands are still living in unsafe buildings, but no action will be taken as long as this despicable, Brexit-obsessed Tory government is in power.

■ Jeremy Corbyn and The Mirror are spot on with the five demands of your Grenfell: Never Again campaign. Tory lies and zero positive action to date over cladding issues on high rise buildings mean their promises are just empty words.

Steven Barber, Gloucester

■ Tragedies like Grenfell will happen as long as we’ve got a Tory government which just doesn’t care about the poor. As Margaret Thatcher once said, “There’s no such thing as society”. Basically, you’re expendable if you’re broke.
