The remarkable Ronaldo is on the brink of yet another scoring milestone.. and now he’s got all-time greats Gerd Muller and Puskas in his sights

-

CRISTIANO RONALDO will bring his career goal tally up to 700 if he scores for Portugal tonight.

The Juventus star netted goal number 699 on Friday in a 3-0 stroll at home to Luxembourg. And he will be looking to make history when he takes to the field against Group B leaders Ukraine in Kiev.

Many in Spain believe the former Real Madrid ‘Galactico’ has already reached this remarkable landmark.

Some statisticians there have added a goal against Real Sociedad in September 2010 to his total.

But that one went in from a free-kick that hit the back of team-mate Pepe and the referee awarded it to the defender, who is now at Porto and played in the Luxembourg game. Whoever is right, Ronaldo is indisputably the sixth top scorer in the history of world football.

The 34-year-old has 605 confirmed goals in club football plus another 94 for his nation.

He is close to overtaking the two legends of the game directly ahead of him in the scoring stakes too.

Gerd Muller (above, right), a World Cup winner with

West Germany in 1974, signed off with 701 career goals.

And Hungarian master Ferenc Puskas (above), who tormented England at Wembley in 1953, ended up with 709. Ronaldo will have to carry on scoring at prodigious rates to catch up with Brazilian greats Romario, who has 748 goals and Pele, who scored 779 times in official matches. Top of the tree is a man who is not a household name across the globe, Josef Bican. He played for three nations between 1933 and 1949; Austria, Czechoslovakia and, briefly in 1939, the Bohemia and Moravia team. He became the only man to score more than 800 goals, finishing with 805. As always, Ronaldo has Lionel Messi breathing down his neck.

The Barcelona star is two years younger with 668 career goals.
