A DEAL to prescribe a life-changing drug free to thousands with cystic fibrosis was hailed by one sufferer’s mum as “the best present ever”.

Christina Walker, whose son Luis will be taking Orkambi by Christmas, said: “I can’t stop smiling. I’m overwhelmingly happy. It’s absolutely wonderful.”

The drug was approved four years ago but US makers Vertex set a price of £104,000 per patient per year, which NHS England said was unaffordable.

The new deal, details of which remain confidential, gives hope to 5,000 young people with the disease which blocks the lungs and often leads to early death.

The Mirror has highlighted the case of Luis, nine, who wrote to Jeremy Corbyn chips, fried chicken and roast dinners. They are so realistic that her children often tuck in, thinking it’s their tea.

Mum of four Selina, 37, says: “I started out making a KFC cake and the reaction to it was wild. People kept saying how asking for help getting Orkambi on the NHS. At the party conference the Labour leader promised to crack down on drug giants abusing their monopolies.

Christina, of Horan, East Sussex, said: “We’ve waited four years for this.

“Sadly, people have died during that time who could have lived longer.

“But the NHS say it will be available within four weeks and that will be the best Christmas present ever.”
