2nd man char g ed over lorry deaths
UK police to extradite 22-yr-old from Ireland
A SECOND man was yesterday charged over the deaths of 39 migrants found in a lorry, while more arrests were made in Vietnam.
Eamonn Harrison, 22, who is accused of transporting the trailer across Europe, appeared at the high court in Dublin.
Police in Essex, where the lorry was found, have started extradition proceedings to bring Harrison to the UK.
Driver Maurice Robinson, 25, has already been charged in the UK over the deaths. Police in Vietnam’s Ha Tinh province yesterday announced they arrested two people and summoned others for questioning.
Essex Police Assistant Chief Constable Tim Smith said last night: “We believe the victims are Vietnamese national.
“We are in direct contact with a number of families in Vietnam and the UK, and we believe we have identified families for some of the victims whose journey ended in tragedy on our shores.”
Harrison, of Mayobridge in Co Down, Northern Ireland, was arrested under a European warrant. Sgt Jim Kirwan told
the court in Dublin it included 39 manslaughter charges, human trafficking and unlawful immigration conspiracy offences. He said the trailer
was delivered by lorry to Zeebrugge, Belgium, before being taken to the UK.
Harrison will appear in court again on November 11. Police are still hunting brothers Ronan Hughes, 40, and Christopher, 34, of Armagh, Northern Ireland.
A green lorry branded “R Hughes livery” was seized in Northern Ireland on Thursday.
Robinson, of Armagh, has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, and other charges. The lorry was discovered in Grays, Essex, on October 23.
