Seven consecutive away wins but boss Lamps was far from happy as he searches for perfection

FIREWORKS piercing the night sky with ominous rumbles, the gripes of wrath engulfed Vicarage Road on all sides. Despite Chelsea’s seventh consecutive away win, boss Frank Lampard (right) was unhappy with the ordeal of a “terrible” last 10 minutes when his moody Blues should have been home and hosed. Skipper Cesar Azpilicueta was aghast at the latest VAR farce, calling for the system to be used “in the right way.” And Watford fans broke into open revolt against head coach Quique Sanchez Flores, demanding more adventure, less caution and singing: “You don’t know what you’re doing.” Chelsea head for tomorrow night’s Champions League date with Ajax in good fettle, but their surge into the top four has left perfectionist Lampard demanding more of his impressive young side.

He said: “At times we are producing some of the form I want to see from us.

“If I’ve got a gripe, it’s that we are not sustaining it for long enough periods.

“It was a terrible last 10 minutes considering how the game had gone. We just cannot have that sloppy bit near the end.”

Goals at the start of each half, from Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic, put Chelsea in command and they would have been out of sight without the heroics of Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Incredibly, it took Kepa Arrizabalaga’s fabulous save deep into stoppage time to deny Foster a sensational equaliser after the nonsense of VAR official Mike Dean awarding a penalty for Jorginho’s ankle tap and Gerard Deulofeu going down as an afterthought.

Watford nearly burgled a point after Deulofeu, robbed of a stone-waller at Tottenham last month, tucked away the spot-kick to set up an unlikely finale.

Lampard warned the VAR experiment was in a “dangerous place” after Dean needed umpteen replays to advise on-field referee Anthony Taylor he had made a ‘clear and obvious’ mistake.

Tell you want, Frank. In true Guy Fawkes tradition, the most dangerous place for

VAR equipment would be a dozen barrels of gunpowder beneath all that stupid technology. Who’s going to light the blue touchpaper – you or me?

Azpilicueta accepted Chelsea should have put the game to bed long before VAR’s interference and Kepa’s late intervention.

But he hinted that players’ views were being ignored and referees need to use the pitchside monitors, saying: “The reality is it took a great save from Kepa to give us three points.

“VAR is there to help referees when there is a clear and obvious mistake. Instead of being in the middle of the pitch, the ref can go to the touchline and see as many replays as he needs.

“My big disappointment is we are not using the full system in the right way.”

Winless Watford are veering towards mutiny.

Of their paltry six goals in 11 games, two were penalties and another was a gift from Arsenal.

Sanchez Flores has collected just four points from a possible 21 since his second coming.

His predecessors Javi Gracia and Marco Silva walked the plank after runs yielding five points from 30 and five from 33 respectively.

Just saying.
