KENNY WON’T NEED JACKET YET AS ELLIS SPARKS ROUT

-

ELLIS HARRISON eased the pressure on Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett last night.

Jackett has come under fire in recent weeks, with the promotion favourites lying in mid-table after a sluggish start to the League One season.

But two-goal Ellis Harrison, John Marquis and Marcus Harness helped the hosts earn an impressive 4-1 win over struggling Southend.

Marquis turned home Brandon Haunstrup’s cross in the 45th minute for the all important breakthrough goal.

Then Harrison then scrambled the ball home five minutes after the break.

Southend’s Brandon Goodship got them back in it and set up a tense finish after an error from keeper Alex Bass.

But Harrison’s late penalty and a Harness strike sealed the win.

While Portsmouth are eyeing an escape from League One, Sol Campbell faces a battle to stop Southend heading in the opposite direction.

The new Shrimpers boss, an FA Cup winner with Portsmouth as a player in 2008, has now lost three successive games since taking charge last month.

Ipswich returned to the top of the table thanks to Danny Rowe’s 53rd-minute winner at Rochdale.

Rowe scored the only goal of the match (above) after meeting Gwion Edwards’ deep cross at Spotland.

The Tractor Boys overhauled surprise packages Wycombe, who they meet later this month, at the summit on goal difference.

Ethan Ebanks-Landell grabbed the only goal of the game as Shrewsbury edged Peterborough.

Darren Ferguson’s side struggled to hit their straps and their evening was summed up by Marcus Maddison seeing his second-half penalty saved by veteran Shrewsbury goalkeeper Joe Murphy.
