A manifesto of empty promises

-

■ In my opinion, the Conservative manifesto is deeply deceitful. The truth matters in politics and their fictions are a threat to our democracy, particularly if they manage to con enough people to vote for them on December 12.

The glaring omissions on social care in their election promises, their distorted version of reality and outright lies during this campaign all beggar belief.

Rivals putting the gloss on their party while tarnishing their opponents has always happened in politics, but Johnson is a different creature altogether – he is a complete stranger to the truth, whether it’s about nurses, hospitals, Brexit or Labour’s plans.

But the Mirror refuses to be manipulated by their propaganda machine and that’s why they kicked you off their bus. They are weasels and utter cowards.

■ I wonder why people who intend voting for Johnson solely because of his promise to deliver Brexit think this will be the answer to all our woes. They had only to hear Priti Patel’s claim that the Tory Government is not responsible for poverty.

Yet they have instigated the Bedroom Tax, Universal Credit, annual cuts to local authorities and a rise in homelessness, food banks and zero-contract hours. How will these disasters all end when Johnson delivers Brexit?

■ The Tory manifesto is a damp squib. There’s nothing in it about adult social care, child poverty or pensioners’ free TV licences.

If Johnson wins on December 12, next year, as we transition out of Europe, just watch as he returns from the EU without a deal so the US healthcare firms can get their hands on the NHS and the rest of us have chlorinated chicken foisted upon us. The best Brexit deal is for us to stay in the EU and work hard to reform it.

Victor Rones, Bracknell, Berks

■ Boris Johnson’s plan is to use the election as a referendum. “Get Brexit done!” What better way to get Labour voters to vote Tory? Then when they have a large majority they can look forward to another five years of milking the country for every penny they can get out of the economy.

In their manifesto they promised just enough to maintain the Tory faithful without giving too much away, and when everyone complains they can just say, “You voted for us”. It won’t matter what they do then.

■ If you want to be a cap-doffer and your children to be cap-doffers, then vote Tory. And so it goes on generation after generation.

The Tory grand plan has always been that they reap the wealth and rewards while the rest of the population do all the graft.

This country is the most unequal in Europe – it’s time for a change. Let’s kick them out now. Stop being conned by their lies.

■ So, Boris is going to recruit 50,000 nurses, is he? Just how does he plan to encourage people to train? My husband is in his last year of training as a mature student and will come out of university with almost £60,000 of debt just to cover his tuition fees and basic living costs.

Plus, he’s had to work throughout his training in order to just have basic living standards, while I work full time as well.
