SERGIO AGUERO

-

HE has scored 177 Premier League goals in 255 games, 41 more than any other current active player, including the most hat-tricks – 12 – and a strike rate of 0.69 goals per game.

Of those 177, 46 were winners – in other words, since 2011 he’s been worth 138 extra points to Manchester City on his own – and the last-gasp finish to snatch the title for City eight years ago will never be beaten for drama.

Don’t forget he has also scored 39 goals in the Champions League, a frontier where City have yet to reach the final – although I wouldn’t put it past them to do so while he’s around. It’s incredible to think that Aguero appeared to be on his way out of the Etihad 18 months ago, but he has managed to reinvent himself as a forward under Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and now Pep Guardiola. He cost £31million, which was a lot of money nine years ago, but his goals – 126 with the right foot, 33 with his left, 17 headers and one off his chest – have cost just £126,000 each, which is like paying peanuts for bars of gold bullion.

The Argentinian has the best record against top-six sides. In other words, he’s the man for the big occasion and turns up when the pressure is most intense. He has scored 15 goals against Chelsea, 12 versus Tottenham, 11 versus Arsenal and nine in Manchester derbies.

He has also scored the first goal in 54 games for City, where Henry broke the deadlock 50 times for Arsenal.

So Aguero gets my vote as the greatest.

If a half-chance falls in the box in stoppage time and your team needs to find a winning goal, he is the striker you would back more than anyone else to bury it.
