VARDY’S ALL ABOUT THE TEAM BUT HE’D LOVE GOLDEN BOOT

- BY JAMES NURSEY

Turf Moor: Tomorrow, 2pm

BRENDAN RODGERS admits Jamie Vardy is desperate to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

Vardy missed out on the accolade in 2015-16 when Leicester won the title as former England team-mate Harry Kane scored 25 to pip him by one goal.

But Vardy is now top of the scoring charts once more after smashing 17 this season.

And with Kane’s season all but wiped out through injury, Marcus Rashford, PierreEmerick Aubameyang, and Danny Ings, all with 14, are left as his nearest challengers.

Ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Burnley, Leicester boss Rodgers said: “He should beat Harry Kane this time. Goalscorers like Jamie should always have that ambition. Jamie is a team player but every striker would love to finish the season as the top scorer.

“He gets paid every month to score goals and create them. That is his bread and butter – that is what he does.”

Manchester City, below), who turned 33 this month, has not scored in his last three appearances.

And City forward Sergio Aguero is closing on him – the little Argentinian’s hat-trick at Aston Villa last weekend took him to 13 for the season.

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham also has 13.

Rodgers (below) has told his Foxes players that it is vital they keep providing the ammunition for their talismanic striker. He added: “We have to get back to creating the opportunities for him. “He will continue to score. When he gets a chance he takes it.

“There are other parts of his game which have got better, like his link-up play, but ultimately all strikers want to score as many goals as they can.”

Rodgers expects a response this weekend from his side after last week’s shock 2-1 home defeat by Southampton.

He said the squad have had a week’s training to rediscover their aggression, adding: “When you have a setback you respond by working twice as hard.”
