Stars gather for the big gong grab

THE NATIONAL TELEVSION AWARDS 2020

ITV, 7.30pm

IT’S that time of the year again, when the leading lights of television come together for a big mutual appreciation ceremony.

Actors and producers get to pat each other on the back – or practise their gracious loser faces – while we watch a round up of the best of the year in TV.

David Walliams takes the reins at London’s O2 to host this live 25th anniversary ceremony, taking over from Dermot O’Leary.

It’s a big night for him as he’s also nominated in the TV judge category, up against Simon Cowell, Sir Tom Jones, Will.i.am and RuPaul.

Meanwhile, Ant & Dec will be on standby to see if they’ve won the TV presenter category for the 19th year. Poor Graham Norton never gets a look in. Elsewhere,

Chernobyl, A Confession, Cleaning Up, The Capture and Gentleman Jack battle it out for best new drama.

Comedy is represented by some big shows on the shortlist, including After Life, Fleabag, Derry Girls, Sex Education and – for some unknown reason – Mrs Brown’s Boys.

Line of Duty, Call The Midwife, Peaky Blinders, Casualty and Killing Eve fight it out for best drama, while all the usual suspects – Britain’s Got Talent, Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice UK and Dancing On Ice – wrestle for top talent show.

The event will of course be rammed with TV royalty, from soap stars and presenters to comedians and reality stars, all dressed up to the nines and hoping for a gong to take home.

Settle in for glamour, affectionate rivalry and a reminder that Brits really do make good telly.
