BBC shamed by dumping Victoria

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ So, the BBC is to axe the Victoria Derbyshire show as it is deemed too costly (Mirror, January 24). This, in my opinion, is a tragedy for broadcasting. I watch this programme daily and I’m full of admiration for those who make it possible. It covers many topics that other shows don’t think of tackling.

It seems those who don’t have Netflix, iPlayer or catch-up facilities and rely purely on terrestrial channels are slowly being deprived of the programmes they enjoy.

I wonder what the licence fee covers as it appears the service is being pared-down?

■ There are other programmes the BBC could axe rather than the excellent Victoria Derbyshire show. Surely, Top Gear and The Travel Show would be better off on commercial television or streaming services where sponsors would foot the bill? Such programmes have always been a bit of a jolly for the presenters and film crew, especially the laddish Top Gear, but Victoria’s show does some very worthwhile work.

■ It’s fair enough that the BBC has to make cuts but we wonder if they should consider axing other programmes such as Rip-Off Britain.

Is it really necessary to have three presenters and crew, often enjoying the sunshine of the Canary Isles or elsewhere, while discussing rip-offs occurring in Britain. This is an unnecessary expense for the licence fee payers – no disrespect to the presenters themselves who have all had excellent careers.

■ I feel so sorry for Victoria Derbyshire. She is an amazing interviewer and broadcaster. I’m sure she will go on to bigger and better things whether for the BBC or a more global audience.

We saw her strength when she battled breast cancer and got involved with The Real Full Monty to raise awareness. Her drive knows no bounds and I, for one, wish her luck.

■ I am disgusted that Victoria Derbyshire’s show has been axed by the BBC. This is the corporation’s only show that I feel accurately reflects the reality of people’s lives. Why do they always need silly tandems presenting news shows? They could get rid of one presenter and keep Victoria.

■ The audacity of the BBC to axe Victoria Derbyshire, which is such a topical programme, beggars belief. Why not axe Rip-Off Britain instead as it is repetitive and, like the presenters, well past its sell by date.

James Alan, Bradford, West Yorks

■ Surely, the BBC needs all the good publicity it can get at the moment with the abolishing of the free over-75s TV licence. Why then make the stupid decision to axe the Victoria Derbyshire show?

Helen Murphy, Barnsley, S Yorks

■ Of all the rubbish shows the BBC could get rid of to save money, it chooses the award-winning Victoria Derbyshire show. I, for one, am livid.

R Hagan, Merseyside
