Trezeguet carried off by delirious Villa fans after dramatic late, late goal seals Wembley final spot

- BY JAMES NURSEY

A DRAMATIC injury-time volley by Trezeguet fired Aston Villa into the Carabao Cup final.

Last night’s semi-final second leg against Leicester looked to be heading to penalties after Kelechi Iheanacho struck 18 minutes from time to cancel out Matt Targett’s early opener.

But Trezeguet booked Villa’s

place at Wembley for March 1.

They must wait until tonight to find out who their opponents will be, with Manchester City hosting Manchester United on the other semi-final, and 3-1 up from the first leg. Targett opened the scoring in the 12th minute at Villa Park after an assist from skipper Jack Grealish. Leicester created several chances in the opening period but found goalkeeper Orjan Nyland in imperious form.

The Norwegian made a string of fine saves, including an amazing one-handed effort to tip Youri Tielemans’ shot on to the bar in the 34th minute.

The visitors felt VAR should have awarded them a penalty two minutes later when Marvelous Nakamba clearly handled James Maddison’s shot.

Villa’s new Tanzania striker Mbwana Samatta made his debut up front for the hosts and blew good chances in either half.

For Leicester’s former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers it was a first loss in a domestic cup competition in 33 games.

Villa manager Dean Smith said: “I certainly let myself go with the goal.

“That deep onto stoppage time, there was a bit of emotion from everyone and the place erupted.

“To take this club to Wembley, I’ll be a very proud man to walk out there with this team.”
