I hope we can keep the things I treasure for many years

- BY NAIMAH ARCHIBALD,

MANY new advancements come with the loss of something we valued – but some things we must treasure and keep. Here are my top five...

1. The NHS Despite its shortcomings, the NHS means Brits do not have to endure the familiar scenario elsewhere in the world where people cannot afford prescriptions or treatment. With talk of privatisation and radical reform, access is under threat – but it must be protected.

2. Phone calls It may be strange to hear a young person say this when many of us seem allergic to using our phones for the one thing they were designed for. In a society where so many are lonely, one of the most important methods of communication mustn’t be lost.

3. The high street They reigned as the local community’s backbone but too many of us are abandoning bricks and mortar for online options. Investment in local areas can only be a good thing – we need to help our high streets survive.

4. TV anticipation This has almost gone! What was more exciting than sitting down at the same time every week to find out if your favourite character survived the cliffhanger? Waiting a week is a sweet TV torture.

5. Music albums With streaming being such a lucrative business, some artists see little need to put out a full body of work and instead flood the market with generic singles. Musicians should continue to keep the LP alive.

Oh, and books. Nothing beats flying through physical pages. Pubs. It would be a shame to miss out on an avocado-infused gin. And cash. We’ve seen too many systems crash. Make money vegan friendly but let’s not get rid of it.
