Agony of her loved ones is too awful for us to imagine

-

WHOEVER you are, whatever TV shows you watch, however aware, or not, you were of Caroline Flack before Saturday, it’s impossible to be unmoved by this.

It’s a complicated story, and at the same time utterly simple.

That this vibrant young woman’s life is over is a tragedy.

It’s gut-wrenching to have to accept that despite an obviously loving family and incredibly supportive friends, Caroline felt so alone. That despair overtook her. That she didn’t understand how much she mattered, or to how many.

It’s hard not to make assumptions, even though the only person who can explain exactly why this happened isn’t here to explain it.

The last few months had been particularly difficult for Caroline, and she’d struggled with her mental health anyway before that.

It’s clear everyone around her did everything they could. Her poor, poor dad, being the first to find her. The friend, who had been staying with her and called her dad.

Caroline’s death has deeply affected people who never met her – how those who knew and loved her must be feeling today is just too awful to contemplate.

When someone takes their life, those left behind often aim to discover The Reason they did it, when it’s always much more complex. They also try to work out who to blame.

There have been accusations flying around, and as satisfying as it may feel to throw them, it’s not the point. In the most desperate state imaginable, Caroline couldn’t see any other way forward. What could possibly be sadder than that?
