SPURS LEGEND ON HIS FAVOURITE MEMORY OF A FRIEND AND WORLD-CLASS TEAM-MATE

-

AS Heung-min Son wheeled away in delight celebrating a stunning goal against Burnley in December, Spurs legend Cliff Jones’ mind drifted back half a century.

To October 5, 1968, and a clash with Leicester, which Tottenham won 3-2 just days before the Welshman left to join Fulham.

It was a game in which Jimmy Greaves scored a hat-trick.

There were no TV cameras at the famous old stadium that day or mobile phones, but many of those packed in would claim it was the best goal the legendary striker ever scored.

“I remember a goal Jimmy scored against Leicester,” Jones said, when asked to pick his favourite memory of his old pal.

“It was similar to the one Son scored the other month. He picked it up in his own half, went past three Leicester defenders and Peter Shilton was the goalkeeper.

“He came out and dived as Jimmy sold him a dummy.

“Jim went round him and rolled the ball into the back of the net.

“Everybody was going potty, the crowd, the players – he brought the house down.

“Yet all Jim was doing was trotting back to the centre spot, rubbing his hands together. That was Jim. The name of the game was scoring goals and it was a special goal and a special moment.

“There have been many great goal-scorers, but Jim was The Man.”

Greaves’ exploits will take centre stage again on Tuesday, two days before his 80th birthday, when a new documentary about the man regarded by many to be England’s greatest goalscorer airs on BT Sport 2.
