MIK LETS HIS GUARD DOWN

- BY JOHN CROSS

MIKEL ARTETA believes Arsenal can cash in on Manchester City’s Champions League misery.

Arteta, who was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at City, admitted he was shocked when he heard the news of his old club’s European ban and has offered his support to his former boss.

But Arteta (above) reckons that Arsenal now have a better chance of getting into the Champions League after their thumping win over Newcastle left them just six points off fifth.

The Gunners boss said:

“A week ago it looked like it was going to take an incredible run to do it. Today it feels like a little bit closer. But it will depend on us.”

The Spaniard sent a message of support to compatriot Guardiola.

“My first reaction to the news was shock. But I have been in contact with him and I just want the best for City,” he said. “I know how hard they work and hopefully a positive thing might come for them.

“That is the way I feel, but now I have to do the very best for Arsenal.”

Arteta singled out Nicolas Pepe for praise after the £72million record signing scored and provided two assists as Arsenal blitzed Newcastle with four second-half goals.

Arteta said: “In moments, he was top-drawer. He made the difference today.”

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce said at half-time he fancied Toon’s chances.

“We defended well and looked a threat on the counter-attack in the first half,” he said,

“I didn’t see that coming in the second half. We gave bad goals away which isn’t like us. We usually don’t give much away.”
