MONK TAKES A VOW OF RESILIENCE

GARRY MONK has vowed to scrap for his job – and ordered his ailing Sheffield Wednesday players to find a “fight-for-life” mentality.

The head coach has had no hint he is on the brink at Hillsborough, but admits a run of one win in 10 games puts him under pressure.

He demanded an immediate improvement in attitude and application from his players after this defeat by Reading, saying: “An extra level of tenacity has been lacking in this period. That pure need to win. That is what a successful team looks like.

“That fight-for-your life mentality, that need to win, to strive for something more.

“I’ve been around changing rooms for 25 years and I know what a successful one looks like, and that needs to happen.

“This is right up there with my most difficult period. You can’t sulk of feel sorry for yourself. You get on with it.

“Ten games is too much. I understand the situation I’m in. I’ll fight and give everything I’ve got.

“Nothing from the owner? No nothing. I’ve never worried about those types of decisions. They’re out of my control. I don’t sit worrying if I have a job or not.”

Goals from Yakou Meite, George Puscas (above right, battling with Dominic Iorfa) and Sam Baldock with a penalty condemned Wednesday to a fourth defeat in their last five home games.

The Royals’ previous league win was on January 1, and boss Mark Bowen said: “I’d be lying if I wasn’t relieved to get the monkey off our back. When you go seven or eight games you’re looking for when the next win comes from.”
